An interactive training system for relief woodcarving.
Led the design of the human-machine interaction experience, user research, and user-testing. Supported on mechanical design.
The product aimed to develop an interactive training system for relief wood carving to lower the barriers to entry, and improve a beginner's rate of learning.
Target Users
Our target users were beginner carvers.
Background: basic tool application and control established.
Blocker: Lack of spatial visualization for complex forms.
Need: Techniques to accurately judge depth and proportion.

System Flow
The system takes a 4 step feedback loop. Once the stock material is situated on the base of the device, the camera will calibrate and measure the distance from itself to the stock material.
It will then compare the height with the intended height of the final carving at every point.
The difference is mapped to a pre-determined colour and projected on the stock material.
The user can then carve the stock material, and get feedback on their carving to help them learn. This new height is fed back into the system and the loop continues.

Iterative Design - Mechanical System
Testing was done at each individual stage and the feedback was carried to the next design version.
